the lost boy essays

the lost boy essays Could you imagine your own mother beating you, burning you, and treating the family dogs better then you? Quite unimaginable to me, but that is what David Pelzer had to go through. My book is the second of a three book series about the true story of David Pelzer. Ever since David was the age of 5 years old to maybe nine, his mother started to hurt him. She told him that he was a bad boy and deserved it all; it was some kind of game to her. At times she would curse at him, beat him vigorously, burn him, make him eat out of the trash, and starve him for days. The only time he really ate was at school during lunch because he would just steal food. When he got home from school he was givin a long load of chores. Sometimes he got the scraps from dinner, but often times on weekends he didnt eat the whole weekend because there was no school. At night, he would sleep on an old army cot with no blankets. Very rough and harsh living conditions for a little boy, but he thought he deserved it because she [his mother] always said he did, and he had no one to tell him that she was wrong. Every night he would hear his parents after he was in bed. He heard them fighting about him. His father knew little of what was going on because he was often at work. He noticed the significant difference in the way his mother treated David versus his other two brothers. He often told her she was wrong and she would just talk about David as if he was some kind of animal, only referring to him as It or the boy. When things came down to it, however, Davids father would One incident was at about seven to eight at night, and Davids parents began to fight once again. Them both being alcoholics did not much help the situation. David heard his mom screaming about how ...

Free Essays on The Lake

The Lake It was early July and my friend Chad and I decided to join his family at the lake. Chad’s family was already up at the lake, and had some extra room in the condo. So we figured, what the hell, we could go for some boating. Right. The lake the only about a two-hour drive away. We were driving in Chad’s father’s convertible sports car, so the drive was quite pleasant. We drove through twisting canyons and long straight roads going just slightly over the speed limit. We arrived at our destination at record-breaking time, which didn’t seem to make his parents too happy. Along with Chad’s family, which consists of four brothers and one sister, were some neighbor friends of theirs and their five-year-old son Nick. The rest of the day was spent miniature golfing and playing catch with Chad’s little brothers. On the following morning we went with Chad’s parents to rent the boat. We got the boat and loaded it up with the gear. We broke the family into groups so each one could have their own time on the boat. Our group was the one that wanted to ski, wake board, ride on the tube, and throw each other off the tube. The other group consisted of people that either didn’t want to ski or were too young. All the younger kids were in this group. Our group was the first to have the boat. We spent hours and hours out on the lake and had an awesome time, even though I got one of the worst sunburns in my life. We returned with the boat so the other group could take their turn. As the second group left on the boat we decided to just go lounge in the swimming pool. After about a half-hour, Chad’s mom came running in and said they had an accident with the boat and that little Nick was knocked unconscious. We ran from the pool to see what exactly happened. Chad’s sister told us that another boat was traveling way too ... Why Cold French Fries Taste So Gross

Why Cold French Fries Taste So Gross Fresh, hot french fries are golden, crispy deliciousness, yet cold fries are limp, grainy, and disgusting. How can changing the temperature turn fries from crave-worthy to cringe-worthy? Science has the answer and its all about starch and water. Perfect Fries A Marriage of Starch and Water Potatoes are mostly starch, which is a carbohydrate polymer. When you cook fries, the starch swells with water. The inside of the fry puffs up into tender, tasty goodness. Meanwhile, the processes of carmelization and the Maillard reaction turn the exterior of the fry into golden, flavorful crispness. When french fries cool down, they keep the golden color and the browned flavor, but the water that was on the inside migrates to the outside. This makes fries soggy on the outside, while the inside turns coarse and gritty. Theres no going back. If youve ever tried reheating fries, you know you can bring them back to a semblance of their former glory, but theyll never be quite as good. A lot of the water is gone, never to return to the inside of the fries. This is why frozen partially-cooked fries come coated with a thin layer of ice (and also why soaking cut potatoes in water yields amazing fries). Temperature and French Fry Flavor Temperature also plays a part, particularly with respect to flavor. Warm food has more flavor than cold food because the chemical reactions that enable you to taste food occur more rapidly (up to a point) at a higher temperature. Temperature also affects how readily molecules enter air so that you can smell them. Since the senses of taste and smell are closely aligned, you taste hot foods more because you can smell them better.

Globalization - Essay Example The entrepreneurial leadership of emerging markets like China and India have greatly contributed to the changing equations. Indeed, the developing clusters of high technology business are comparable to Silicon Valley. So I believe that in the next ten years, one of these clusters in China and India could seriously jeopardize the status of Silicon Valley. Technology hubs in Bangalore in India and around Tsinghua University in China are fast acquiring credibility in the global market. HSBC claims that ‘growth among emerging markets will mean that by 2030, half of the world’s main trading nations will change what they export’ (2013). 20% of global R&D spending is made by China and India (Berger, 2012). Both the countries have significantly increased their R&D capabilities to deliver highly innovative products across different segment to compete in global market. These are hugely critical statistics that indicate the changing dynamics of the economic power wielded through technology and expanding knowledge base. The technology hubs in these countries are responsible for their countries’ growing economic power in the global market. They are rapidly increasing their database of skilled workers and professionals by developing world-class educational institutions and opening new opportunities for them to experimen t with new ideas. Infosys in India and Lenovo in China are important entrepreneurial ventures that have made considerable impact on the changing map of political economy. Another very important fact is that both the countries have introduced reforms in their economies to allow foreign investment. This is big step because it helps to transfer and share knowledge which further boosts their performance and gives them distinct leverage in the new scenario of shifting powers. Elliot (2006) says that America is looking

Buddhism Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Buddhism - Research Paper Example Darwin’s theory of evolution erupted a great deal of debate as it challenged traditional religious explanations of the world and nature (Boeree). His work encouraged further research into the concept of evolution and other unsolved mysteries of life at the time. Therefore, it is important to explore the evolutionary theory from various religious perspectives in order to understand how the theory fits in, and this paper focuses on the Christian and Buddhist view of the evolution theory. It is a popular belief in the world that man and all of nature was created by a sacred deity for whom all mankind ought to be grateful. This is evidenced in Christianity with enormous reference to the story of creation in the Bible. However, the evolution theory serves to upset this belief at the expense of most believers who find it imperative to defend and preserve it. Among Christian scholars and believers, the evolution theory denies the role by God as the sole creator of the world while mos t scientific research ignore divine activity. This is achieved by the proposition of antitheist theories by renowned naturalists who suggest the existence of the world is due to a less explored scientific phenomenon. As such, Christians have always voiced their concerns on scientific theories that contradict the creation theory. The clergy and the Christian community have always united to call for the rejection of the naturalism theories based on philosophical, theological, and historical grounds. As a result, Christianity and the scientific community have always being at loggerheads with each other. Universally, Christians fail to understand how God’s involvement in creation is recognized in events that lack scientific explanations while His overall role is ignored. This illustrates how meaningful divine action is shelved only do be adopted where gaps in human knowledge prevail and a scientific description is lacking (Miller 8). As such, naturalistic proposals such as the ev olution theory serves to belittle divine action thus fuel conflict between science and the Christian faith. For instance, Christians and scientists differ on the role of pain, suffering, and death in the world. Among Christians, it is widely accepted that God exercises His sovereignty, transcendence, and providence with regard to natural evil that creates pain and suffering. On the hand, the scientific community readily accepts the theory of natural selection in which Darwin believed that all species had a common ancestor, but evolved to survive due to the process of natural selection. Organisms that fail to adapt to their habitat do not prevail under the new environmental conditions and hence, cannot survive, which explains natural selection where only the strong and mighty thrive effectively. While the scriptures present the evidence of God’s work, scientific theories, in their capacity cast doubts among believers who find themselves convinced by scientific evidence. It is evident that those who profess Christianity have no problem in adopting various concepts and exploits in science, as seen in the adoration given to the laws of science and physics. For this reason, most Christians tend to believe in some aspects of the evolution theory, leaving a majority of them confused since they fail to integrate scientific concepts to their religious beliefs. Water and Environment science - Research Paper Example the inhabitants of the Portland city since it supplies them with sufficient amounts of fish like the Chinook, Sockeye and the Chun Salmon, wild animals as well as natural sceneries. The bird species are found on the river banks and they include the bald eagles and the great blue herons (Sethajintanin, et al., 114). Willamette River has undergone a tremendous change in the last two hundred years which is characterized by various human activities like the building of dams, dykes, and dredging. There are various sources of pollution in the Willamette River which include the sanitary discharge from the cities of Corvallis and Portland whose combined storm as well as the sanitary sewer release untreated sewage in to the river during the rainy season. Oil and fuel spills are common in the river because of the boating activity common in the river. Sediment erosion is common in the area where flood carries pollutants from upstream areas in to the river thus causing pollution of the river. Household wastes like solvents soaps as well as the household chemicals that are washed down from the roofs and eventually drain into the river (Poor & Jeffrey, 772). The Willamette River is now considered cleaner than it was in the late 1920’s and in the 1930’s when the river was in a much polluted state that a fish placed in it could die immediately. An authority known as the State Sanitary Authority which was later changed into the Department of Environment Quality. This Authority was responsible for overseeing the cleaning up of the River. In 1968, a major clean up was done which involved the identification of all major waste discharges were controlled thus making the river much safer (Rojas-Burke, 134). From the results of the data collected from the river it is clear that the temperatures were high during the three testing scenarios because of the times in which the samples were taken. High temperatures affect the functioning of the aquatic life since their bodies function

Management Evolution Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Management Evolution - Research Paper Example One cannot possibly stick to a single strategy and move about using it in all organisations thus it is very necessary to be flexible within the context of managing people. It has been observed that the styles for managing people have evolved and changed within years. In the past a more traditional approach was usually undertaken; however, as extensive changes in technology took place a more flexible approach was adapted toward managing people. Managing people is a very important phenomenon from what I observed within my own studying environment. If teachers do not put in extra effort towards the behavioural approach of the students they do not intend to attain successful results. Teachers who tend to be more dominating whilst not encouraging much of the feedback usually encounter students that are highly pressurized, under stress or carefree students who don’t give importance to their education since their ideas are not given importance to by their teachers. On the other hand those teachers who tend to be more involved with their students also tend to have extremely good results with their students. But then again one more thing that I noticed was that involving students is not necessarily the best way since sometimes student do take advantage of this benefit. Personally what I feel is that it gives the student the impression that the teacher will not really mind if he does not do his homework or submit in his assignment since he/she is extremely friendly thus there is no chance of being punished. This only implies the fact that within our studying environments we do have different teachers with different styles of handling students. I guess the best way is to be involved with students but then in the end the final decision should be that of a teacher. But again I believe that it is not at all necessary that this same tactic is applied in every class at my school. Instead, one should undertake handling approaches using the contingency theory which means handling students in accordance with their behaviour. For example, in a class of non serious students one should use a democratic approach since they need to be shown that there is somebody who does care about them and their ideas. On the other hand in a class where there is a mix of naughty and studious students a teacher should adapt the paternalistic approach which means taking their feedback but in the end the final decision is that of the teacher. Thus, my studying environment, if I observe, is a combination of all leadership styles and I believe this is extremely effective since every class has students with different attitudes and therefore it is very necessary for a teacher to adapt to the class according to the particular culture associated with those students. The approach towards managing people was first laid down by Robert Owen. He laid down the theory for improvement towards human relations. Therefore he was the one who believed in improving the living of works. Charle s Babbage, on the other hand, was the father of modern computing who laid down the theory of specialization which involves giving various tasks to different individuals according to their expertise. Specialization basically implies that a person will feel motivated because he has been given the job he/she is best at. Thus gaining an expertise will allow him to increase the productivity of the organisation. The problem, however, with specialization is that it tends to
